Featuring a high-profile slate of national and regional coaches and athletes, the West Ottawa Wrestling Camp emphasize technical skill development and strategy. Our curriculum covers everything from basic fundamentals—stance, positioning, takedowns, and escapes—to advanced technique and strategy, including set-ups, finishes, and drilling. We separate wrestlers into smaller groups determined by age, weight and ability, so each wrestler will receive a level of training that fits his or her skill and experience level. The philosophy of our camp also relies on teaching a disciplined, focused mindset that is the trademark of the "Pantherstyle" Ethos.
The West Ottawa Wrestling Camp is directed by college coaches along with All-American wrestlers. Active college wrestlers serve as counselors at this camp, as well as regional all-star talent. Our premier roster of coaches and wrestlers will train side-by-side with camp athletes and lead by example with the discipline and work ethic that are the foundation of our camp. This is all done at no cost to all West Ottawa Public School athletes. West ottawa wrestling camp

HOLLAND, MI West Ottawa Middle School (WOMS) Wrestling is a fundamental, and arguably, most important part of our developmental program. Athletes are introduced to the subtle nuances of the sport, and are eventually brought to compete at a competitive level in the area. Taking the helm this year are two new Co-head coaches, Brandon Tresemer and Cassie Virgil. Coming to us from Zeeland East, Coach Tresemer bring a tenacious flare to our middle school program. He had a great prep career at Zeeland East, setting his school's record for the most career wins (158). He also was an all state wrestler and a district champion his senior year. Cassie comes to us all the way from Washington state where she had an impressive prep career. An overall competition record of 72-94 . In 2006 she won a state title, and then went on to place at the state, and win regional and district titles She turned to coaching women's wrestling for the 2009-2010 and 2015-16 seasons. In her reign, she had 10 WIAA state qualifiers , as well as 5 Academic All-State girls. Cassie is also our head girls team coach. Practices will run from 3pm to 5:pm everday in the Macatawa Bay Middle School Wrestling Room. Any questions, please email Tresemer, Virgil, or the program directly. The West Ottawa Wrestling family was treated Wednesday Night to our 3rd Annual Black n' White Night. This year in an attempt to prepare wrestlers and new fans for the dual meet scenario, we decided to have two full dual teams. 8 varsity positions were filled, with wrestlers needing to win the best two out of three to hold the spot. In addition to this, several exhibition matches were held to ensure every Panther got a match. Team Black posted a marginal victory over Team White. "This is a great sign for the program," Coach Ryan Lancaster commented about the scrimmage."We had numerous matches that were extremely close, which shows me that we will have some depths at a few weight classes this year." The Panthers will travel to Hesperia on Wednesday to dual Reed City and #8 Hesperia. Then Saturday, varsity heads to Zeeland's Gene Kraai Memorial and Varsity B heads to Allendale. Fortune favors the hard workers. At least, that is how it works for a wrestler. We met up with senior West Ottawa wrestler Julio "the Real Deal" Del Real to discuss the up coming season, We highlighted his off season work ethic, his aspirations and his inspirations. How did you prepare for this season? I went to work outs, (off season) tournaments and Kenowa Hills. What was being on a travel team like? Its was cool; going outside of my comfort zone wrestling other people that I've never heard of before. How were the Kenowa Hills Summer Knights Clinics? I liked them, I plan on using some of the moves that I learned there. What are some of the hurdles you have to face? Confidence, pressure to do good and to leave high school and be remembered for something. What has been for motivation in the off season? "State titles are won by the ones who love the sport; keep strong to your faith and things will work out." Who is your wrestling hero? Ramon Correa, Ryan Lancaster and Jordan Burroughs HOLLAND, MI
Though girls wrestling is nothing new at West Ottawa, the girls team is. A few of the girls that have competed with the boys for the last few seasons have also made the switch to compete with the girls team as well. We sat down with sophomore Evann Biedenbach and discussed her aspirations, her competitive drive, and continuation with the sport. What got you interested in wrestling? My dad did wrestling in high school and was pretty good at it so I was interested in the sport. Do you have any experience prior to this season? Yes, I do have prior experience with wrestling. I started wrestling in 8th grade, and even though I didn't excel in the sport I still enjoyed it. What is is like being a part of history at West Ottawa? It honestly to me feels no different from being on the guy's team. I'm glad to know that I am part of the change. What are some hurdles you have had to face? Some hurdles that I face are mostly for when I wrestle in the guys season when I wrestle guys I am typically less strong. Do you have any advice for girls that want to wrestle? Just do it. Wrestling will help you do amazing things. Wrestling has helped me get my anger out when I'm really (angry) for some reason. Lately, wrestling has been the only thing that has kept me going. Who is your wrestling hero? My wrestling hero is Thomas Gilman who wrestled for the University of Iowa. The reason why he is the person that I look up to for wrestling is because he is amazing at wrestling, and he won an award for being the most dedicated wrestler and I want to start being more dedicated to wrestling. HOLLAND, MI
West Ottawa has embarked on its inaugural girls wrestling season and wanted to sit down and chat with some of our competitors. Zeeland native Gabby Ramirez wrestled at the Myrmidon Attack Tournament this past weekend (and won her very first match). Ramirez has proven herself to be a very driven athlete on and off the mat thus far, We wanted to know what drives her and if she had any advice for future wrestlers. What got you interested in wrestling? I’ve always been weight lifting and I never really did any sports besides throwing shot put in track and field. Do you have any experience prior to this season? This is the first year I've done wrestling but I practice at Myrmidon to get me ready for the season. What is is like being a part of history at West Ottawa? It feels pretty cool to be apart of something that shows that girls are as strong as boys are. What are some hurdles you have had to face? The feeling that i’m not strong enough when I wrestle but thing is that it doesn’t really matter if you’re strong enough. What matters is how quick of a thinker you are when you’re on the mat. A quote from my favorite wrestler (Helen Maroulis) that keeps me going is “I am enough.” Do you have any advice for girls that want to wrestle? Just go for it, being a female wrestler is a hard to do when many people are against it, but I swear it is the most self-powering thing i’ve ever done in my life. Who is your wrestling hero? Helen Maroulis is my all time wrestling hero. I watch her interviews and her matches all the time and each video I watch it makes me want to be a better wrestler than I was the day before. She makes me want to train harder and be the strongest I can be when I wrestle. |
